Fat Loss Lie #8

Fat Loss Lie: Meal Replacement Products Burn Fat

Supplement companies are always trying to convince us that meal replacement products (MRP’s), powdered mixes, and shakes will somehow magically reduce fat and build muscle. The truth is, they’re nothing more than “powdered food” (aka “liquid food”).

The only benefit of these types of products is convenience.

Sometimes it’s hard to get enough high quality protein from whole foods, so quality MRP’s are great when you’re in a rush and you don’t have time to eat a healthy meal. But make no mistake about it…. they are not better than food – no matter what any supplement “guru” says.

Fitness magazines, multi-level marketers, and owners of places like GNC will say that MRP’s are the greatest thing since electricity, but that shouldn’t come as any surprise since they are a multimillion dollar business.

With the exception of a post-workout protein shake like Muscle Milk during a “mass-building program,” eating real food will always be better than drinking a shake. Our bodies are created to digest whole foods – not powders or pills. And when you digest solid food every 2-3 hours like one of my previous posts says, you can actually INCREASE your metabolism. This little known secret is known as the “thermic effect of food.” Powders fail to take advantage of this “metabolic boost” trick.

Whenever you have a choice, and whenever time permits, you should always choose whole foods over powders and drinks.
